Medical Cup coming at the end of September – we can root for UP MS students

August 18, 2021

The last weekend of September will be a joyous one for sporty UP MS students: the upcoming Medical Cup will be organised in Szeged, and the UP MS will also be represented.

The esteemed Medical Cup is organised every year since 1972; the location changes between the cities of the four medical schools: Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged and Budapest. Students can participate in women’s and men’s basketball, handball, volleyball and water polo, and men’s football against the teams from other universities.

Pécs was last hosting the cup in 2017, when the local team won five gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

The last, 47th Medical Cup was organised in 2019 in Debrecen. The 48th competition to be hosted in Szeged in 2020 had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, therefore it will be held on September 25-26 this year. Students who graduated in 2019 are allowed to participate this year.

According to the website of the UP MS Sports and Physical Education Center, the Medical Cup has serious tradition, and has been incredibly popular in the past ten years both for participants and observers from all universities. Both women’s and men’s teams are rewarded, and the best university also gets a prize. The best and most successful participant in each sport gets a special prize.

The Cup is now much more than a competition organised between the four medical schools: it involves a huge number of students, who can then relax and enjoy a plethora of social and cultural events (concerts, performances) after the sports events.
