Conference season with the teacher-researchers of the Dept. of Languages for Biomedical Purposes and Communication

At the end of August 2024, with the generous support of the Faculty of Medicine of Pécs, Gabriella Nagy spent three days in Basel at the annual AMEE conference organised in collaboration with the International Association for Health Professions Education. The conference focused on the challenges and future of health professional education. The high-profile event was organised in person and online and attracted over 4000 participants from 108 countries worldwide. Having the e-poster of the interdisciplinary research and educational development from Pécs accepted and presented in person in the academic development section out of more than 6000 submitted abstracts was an honour. The presentation was entitled: An Interdisciplinary Model for Educator Proficiency Development in Pharmacy Education.

COMET 2024, the 22nd International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Communication, Medicine and Ethics, was held in Brescia, Italy. Held at the University of Brescia in a picturesque setting, the two main themes of the event were doctor-patient communication and intercultural communication in healthcare. Four lecturer-researchers from the Language Institute, Renáta Nagy, Dr Alexandra Csongor, Dr Andrea Zrínyi and Judit Szalai-Szolcsányi, participated in the poster session of the conference, actively contributing to the professional discourse and the success of the event.

Five researchers-faculty members of the Institute, Dr Anikó Hambuchné Dr Kőhalmi, Renáta Halász, Rita Kránicz, Dr Anita Sárkányné Dr Lőrinc, Judit Szalai-Szolcsányi, participated in the ICCH 2024 International Conference on Communication in Healthcare 2024, held in Zaragoza, Spain, from 9 to 13 September 2024. The conference programme focused on clinician/health professional-patient interactions and specific topics in health communication. The Institute was represented at the conference with three poster presentations on the following topics: The simulated patient program in medical education (Dr. Anikó Kőhalmi Hambuchné, Dr. Judit Fekete, Dr. Rita Kránicz, Dr. Anita Sárkányné Dr. Lőrinc, Dr. Katalin Lepenye Eklics, Anikó Berta and Renáta Halász); Results of telecommunication research in medical practice (Dr. Rita Kránicz, Dr. Anikó Kőhalmi Hambuchné, Csilla Egyed, Dr. Sárkányné Dr. Lőrinc Anita); and Empathic and Assertive Communication in Clinical Practice (Judit Szalai-Szolcsányi and Katalin Eklicsné Dr Lepenye). The conference included 8 parallel sessions with presentations, innovative technological and creative art performances, symposia, workshops, debates and roundtable discussions. The conference provided an excellent opportunity for participants to present their research results and to come away with a body of knowledge that will support their education and research in the future.

Eight colleagues from the institute participated in the 6th English for Healthcare conference in Brighton, UK, on 6-7 September 2024. The event focused on English language teaching, innovation, and sharing good practices. The main themes of the conference were:

  • The impact of artificial intelligence and educational technology on English language teaching.
  • Overcoming communication challenges caused by cultural differences in the globalised healthcare sector, especially for the international workforce.
  • Innovations and best practices in preparing for the medical English and OET (Occupational English Test) exams.

The participating colleagues: Dr Vilmos Warta, Dr Timea Németh, Dr Gabriella Hild, Dr Anna Dávidovics, Dr Alexandra Csongor, Dr Anita Hegedűs, Csilla Egyed and Renáta Nagy, gave a total of three presentations and one poster presentation, actively contributing to the exchange of ideas and the success of the conference.

The Polish partner institute of the Institute of Health Language and Communication hosted the first international conference of the Institute of Language of the Jagellonian University in Krakow, 4-6 September 2024. At the conference, entitled 1st International Conference on Languages in Medicine- Teaching, Testing, Practice, the Institute was represented by Erika Meiszter (supervisor: Dr. Ágnes Koppán) and Anikó Berta (supervisor: Dr. Gabriella Hild) with their presentations on the use of a simulated patient program with actors in medical education and the results of a quantitative survey on the topic of positive feelings in language learning.
