„Intelligence is also necessary for healing” - medical graduates were inaugurated

June 30, 2025

Graduation Ceremonies were held at the University of Pécs Medical School in the Dr. György Romhányi Aula on June 28. That morning 142 Hungarian graduates, then all together 136 English and German graduates were celebrated in the early afternoon.

„They should continuously develop their knowledge, but knowledge is not enough, intelligence is also required for healing. I hope that the last couple of years contributed to that” said Professor Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of the University of Pécs, in his ceremonial speech, who also added that medical degree does not mean the end, rather a new beginning, an invitation to lifelong learning. He highlighted that seeing the person behind the symptoms is important, especially in today's technology-centric world.

He also mentioned the responsibility of the future generations regarding the importance of proper communication and effective conflict management, and also added the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence. He drew attention to its use, that it should not overshadow critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Started in 2022, former graduates welcome graduating students with motivational speeches at the Graduation Ceremony every year. This year Dr. Fariborz Bagheri was invited, an internationally renowned professor of urological surgery working in Dubai, but he has strong ties to his alma mater. He recieved his degree in Pécs in 1994, completed his residency programme here, then worked for more than a decade at the Urology Clinic, where he and his colleagues played an important role in spreading laparoscopic surgical techniques. He completed the PhD programme in 2017, and in recognition of his work, he was awarded the title of Honorary Associate Professor by the University of Pécs in 2020.

He started his medical journey in the United States of America and continued in several European Countries. With over 25 years of experience in the field of urology, he practices general urology in males and females, including genitourinary tract infections and traumas. He possesses advanced skill in laparoscopic and robotic procedures, in upper and lower urinary tract endoscopic and laser procedures. He has extended experience in open urological surgeries. He expanded his skills in female urinary incontinence and in uro-oncology diseases. He is also an expert in men’s health and andrology diseases, including conservative and surgical management. He also teaches and mentors laparoscopic and endourological procedures. He is fluent in English, Arabic, Hungarian, Farsi, Achomi, and Some Urdu, but he rather writes in English. The core of his practice lies in treating patients and seeing them happy making his journey as a urologist incredibly rewarding.

„I was also sitting here 31 years ago, full of dreams, questions, hopes, and fears – probably similar to you now. I have travelled the world, worked in leading hospitals, and achieved two Guinness World Records in my profession since then, but the people I have been able to serve and the values I understood here at this university are far more important. In today’s world we need healers, not just doctors, perhaps more than ever before” – emphasized Professor Dr. Fariborz Bagheri.

He believed that professional and personal success relied on six basic pillars: do no harm to others nor to ourselves, have clear goals and mentors from whom we can learn, be disciplined and use time wisely, be persistent and never give up!

After Professor Dr. Fariborz Bagheri’s speech, graduates took the Hippocratic Oath, then on behalf of the Medical School Dean Dr. Miklós Nyitrai officially admitted they as doctors by a handshake. Those who graduated with summa cum laude study results also received the Elizabeth Ring.

At the end of the Graduation Ceremony, on behalf of the newly graduated doctors Dr. Marcell Szkevisz delivered his speech and expressed their appreciation, then Dr. Míra Zsófia Peresztegi received a certificate in recognition of her many years of outstanding demonstrator work.

On behalf of the graduates, Dr. Anna Zsiros also spoke to their teachers and family members. She said that she looked over her peers with pride. She recalled significant events and memories from the last couple of years, the rough road of acquiring knowledge. She also added the fact that Pécs became their home, and how much it had given them. She expressed her gratitude to their teachers, family members, friends, and fellow graduates as well, and all of whom contributed to holding their degree today.

The Graduation Ceremony of the English and German programme students started at 2 p.m., following a similar schedule to the Graduation Ceremony of the Hungarian programme students. They were welcomed by Professor Dr. Ferenc Gallyas, Head of the English Programme Committee in English, and by Professor Dr. Péter Than, Head of the German Programme Committee in German, followed by a motivational speech from Professor Dr. Fariborz Bagheri. After the ceremony, Dr. Seperh Hatami and Dr. Awa Nikou held their speech in English and in German.

In memory of Dr. Gyula Mestyán, Professor of Pediatrics, this year the leadership of the Medical School acknowledged the outstanding demonstrator work of a graduate during the ceremony. Based on the decision of the Undergraduate Research Committee, Dr. Jessica Seetge won the Mestyán Gyula Award, for which graduates were able to apply. Dr. Sepehr Hatami was also acknowledged for her outstanding demonstrator work.

At the end of the Graduation Ceremony, on behalf of the newly graduates Dr. Naader Karimi addressed their instructors and family members in English, and Dr. Jessica Seetge did so in German.
